Welcome to the GDI Website! Below you will find the most up-to-date schedule for the course, so it will serve you to bookmark this page and to check it at the beginning of the week, so you can know what is due for the scheduled days.

1st Day of Class: Introductions; Class Expectations; Design Discussion; Course Structure and Process; Inspiration; Student Work; Discuss first project and beginning process
Due Next Class: Visual Mind-maps; Historical design research (find 5 examples of historical design based on eras of design listed on project sheet and others discussed today)

Project 1: Conceptual Design Process 
January 16–February 1

Tuesday, January 16
Go over project goals and review visual mind-maps and historical findings with small groups; Begin visual-dumping and forced connections
Due: Sketches based on direction choice and previous brainstorming; more specific visual research

Thursday, January 18
Review progress thus far with group and prepare for next steps; What questions do you need answered? and , How can you find them?; Discuss visual research and production of mood boards
Due: Mood Boards (Do one for each historical direction)

Tuesday, January 23
Review questions and findings for conceptual design series and discuss next steps; Present Moodboards
Due: Next set of digital sketches due with more specific visual concepts based off historical directions chosen

Thursday, January 25
Review digital drafts in small groups and with instructor for feedback; Work in class

Critique of Final Concepts / Printed

Next Class: Have Direction Decided; Visual Research Completed

Thursday, February 8
Look at directions and visual research; Discuss Idea Generation Practices; Work on those techniques in class
Next Class: Have ideation complete and show what directions that led to

Tuesday, February 13
Look at process and sketches of icons; Work on completing first full draft of icons; Determine style and color; Look at Part 2 of Project

Thursday, February 15
Show clean drafts of first icons with color and style applied to some for feedback; Go over techniques for storytelling, way finding / use of iconographic language
Next Class: Complete icon set printed; Ideas for folded booklet design/content 

Tuesday, February 20
Final critique of icons printed in both black & white and color; Look at sketches for booklet and work on application of icons and content to booklet

Thursday, February 22
Work in class on design of booklet
Next Class: Be prepared to show 1st draft of booklet

Critique of first digital draft of booklet

GD History Continued; Present Assigned History; Style and System; Content: What parts of history do we show? (Overall time 2-3 minutes) 
Next Class: Come with individual design ideas to present to group

Tuesday, March 20
Present ideas to group and decide on visual direction; Work together towards consistency and design assets + storyboarding
Next Class: Finish 1st draft of design bring to class for review

Thursday, March 22
Review drafts of design assets/storyboard; Make final changes, as necessary; Plan for animation, pull in assets, begin work in After Effects
Next Class: Work on Animation

Tuesday, March 27
Review final complete animating parts; look at together and decide on final tweaks and assign
Next Class: Complete Animation

Project 4: Event Promotion + Packaging (Project Sheet)
Tuesday, April 3–Finals

Tuesday, April 3
Complete Animation; Discuss the requirements and process of final project; Finalize promo direction; Look at examples; Discuss postmodern reappropriation; systems design
Next Class: Research & Decide on Specs for Project: Event Specifics, Giveaway item, Work on 
Mood Boards; Read Lupton 114-139

Look at Plan for specifics + mood boards; Determine visual direction based on feedback on mood boards; discuss mockups / kit of parts and Branding Systems; Sprint
Next Class: Complete Content for Pieces; Work on Design

Tuesday, April 10
Look at content and visual direction work—Should have solid visuals/overall style in place by this time (choice of type, colors, illustrations, photography, etc.) so you can begin work on different pieces of kit; Work on full written description of event + how you plan to promote (what are your pieces) and what form your brochure/program, giveaway and packaging will be.

Thursday, April 12
Finalize visual assets and work on mockups; Review digital drafts of visual pieces
Next Class: Have digital drafts of all pieces to show for feedback

Thursday, April 17
Work on finalizing drafts of mockups
Next Class: Complete 1st draft of mockups

Tuesday, April 24
Look at drafts of mockups; Work on finalizing mockups

Thursday, April 25
Final class day and chance to get feedback on changes to final pieces
Next Class: Must have all pieces printed, folded, put together in promo package
